From: Cemail@example.com (Reuters) Subject: Calcium in pregnancy lowers child's blood pressure Organization: Copyright 1997 by Reuters Date: Thu, 31 Jul 1997 16:01:14 PDTLONDON (Reuter) - Giving pregnant women calcium supplements can result in lower blood pressure in their children, a team of international researchers reported Friday.
The study adds to a growing body of evidence that what a woman eats while pregnant can strongly affect her child's health years later.
The World Health Organization helped arrange the study of 591 children in Argentina, Uruguay and Switzerland.
Their mothers had been given either a calcium supplement of two grams a day while pregnant, or a placebo.
``Overall, systolic blood pressure was lower in the calcium group,'' the researchers, led by Jose Blazon of the Censor Rosarino de Estudios Perinatales in Argentina, wrote in a report in the British Medical Journal.
Systolic blood pressure, the top number in a blood pressure measurement, was especially noticeably lower in overweight children.
They said this was the first controlled study of its type.
``Fetal life seems to be a period for programming blood pressure; the
magnitude of the effect observed has health implications among overweight
children,'' the researchers concluded.
